Padua and the Early Renaissance. The fifteenth century
With the end of the long and highly sophisticated late Gothic parenthesis that saw a role not second to that of Venice and Verona, the Tempo Novo della Rinascita Padova began between the end of the thirties and the early forties of the fifteenth century, when the city, now in the hands of the Serenissima, it still attracted extraordinary artists from outside. Donatello lived in Padua from 1443 to 1453 creating fundamental works such as reliefs and bronze sculptures for the Saint, the equestrian statue dedicated to Gattamelata. His stay in Veneto had important consequences and even in Padua he was able to deal with another phenomenon of rediscovery of the Ancient, already underway for some time. The Paduan Humanism, implemented by the Venetian contribution, led the antiquarian research to the success of Andrea Mantegna and to the complex evolution that will lead to extraordinary results in the canteri of the renewal of the Saint.
In the background, the historical and social events that took Padua between the age of independence and that of cultural autonomy from Venice.
