The repair of the Barrandovsky bridge in Prague is delayed. A third shift was deployed
This year’s repair of Prague’s Barrandovské Bridge, which was originally supposed to end on September 2, is about 27 days late. Deputy Mayor Adam Scheinherr (Praha Sobě) told journalists this on Wednesday. Therefore, according to him, a third shift has been assigned to work since Monday. The reason for the delay, according to the deputy, is that there are more fittings in the bridge and they are stronger than expected according to the project. Reconstruction of the bridge began on May 16. The workers first demolished the approach ramp from Strakonická Street, which they are now rebuilding, and milled the roadway and prepared cornices, railings and insulation.
“We are now in the phase where we are completing the final works within the main structures of the bridge deck. Pre-tensioning of the steel cables inside the bridge deck is underway, and then we will be able to start with the surfaces,” Scheinherr described the current state of the works. According to him, the original ropes inside the bridge are corroded and need to be replaced with new ones.
When drilling holes for new ropes, however, the builders ran into problems with the crossbar in the places where the ramp from Strakonická Street connects. “What we’re running into is that there’s too much rebar. Moreover, it is stronger than it was in the project,” added the deputy. That is why, according to him, it has not been possible to finish the work on the transom for about a month.
The Barrand bridge from 1983 is part of the city ring road and has never been repaired. 140,000 cars cross it daily, which makes it the busiest road in Prague. The reconstruction of the building is spread over several years and always lasts only part of the year. In total, the works for all years will cost 594.5 million crowns.
