Which of the projects is better prepared for warming, drought, downpours or energy self-sufficiency? Vote online in the Adapterra competition.
Climate change brings with it many changes and adverse impacts. It is not surprising that measures to deal with overheating of cities, torrential rains or drought in the countryside in the Czech Republic are noticeably increasing. The national competition Adapterra Awards annually presents and awards the best of them. 18 projects advanced to the finals this year, mostly from the South Moravian Region and Prague. From the beginning of August until October 15, the public can vote online on the website HERE and award one of them the Sympathy Award.
Almost 70 implemented projects that respond to the effects of climate change applied for the fourth year of the nationwide Adapterra Awards 2022 competition. Among them, we can also find 17 projects from Prague – for example, improvements to school gardens, rain beds, green roofs, planting trees, sowing flowery meadows, but also reducing energy requirements in town hall buildings. Among the 18 finalists this year, innovative reconstructions of public buildings, self-sufficient houses, large-scale restoration of ponds and wetlands, or anti-erosion measures in the landscape were included. The competition is organized by the Partnership Foundation and Integra Consulting under the auspices of the Ministry of the Environment and with the support of the capital city of Prague. Prague has a category in the competition for projects on its territory.
“Prague, together with the South Moravian Region, is a big driver in the field of adaptation measures. This year, four successful top Prague projects benefit from the award – the new building of the Prague 12 Town Hall, the restoration of the Čelakovské gardens near the National Museum, the comprehensive revitalization of the Českobrodská secondary school building in Prague 9 and the Sakura residence. Apart from the last one, these are investments by the city, which is aware of the need to address the overheating of some localities, the drying up of greenery or the energy inefficiency of some public buildings. The Adapterra competition is a good way to draw attention to innovative projects, add inspiration and possible solutions,” says Jana Plamínková, deputy mayor of the capital. m of Prague for the environment.

“Adaptation measures for the landscape and cities are deliberately complemented by adaptation measures close to nature in the form of greenery and water features. In the case of buildings, they are usually combined with the use of smart, sustainable energy and some technical elements – for example, shading, retention or saving drinking water,” says the coordinator of the competition, Andrea Křivánková from the Partnership Foundation. In the Adapterra Awards competition, I try to present innovative projects from this area, convey inspiration and show ways through which we will be able to adapt to changing conditions, especially overheating and drought.
Prague projects
For example, the revitalization of Čelakovské orchards was among the main projects. The place, cut off from the surrounding city by the main road, has been transformed into a pleasant public space, which has brought the residents of Prague back here and at the same time used the measures of the blue-green infrastructure, is looking for new possible ways of retaining water in the area, maintaining and developing the tree layer, as well as a sustainable way of managing the area. Sakura is a residential complex in Prague 5 Košířy literally surrounded by greenery, combining world-class architecture with lush vegetation on every balcony or terrace. The complex also includes a semi-public park.

Another recent project is the revitalization of the Českobrodská Elementary School building. A smart building now produces more energy, consumes, is carbon positive. You use photovoltaics and heat pumps. Maintain a high-quality and healthy microclimate in the building, gray water is used for toilet flushing and rainwater is used for the green bay. The building has green roofs and facades. The purchase and sale of electricity from the network is optimized according to dynamic prices.
Adaptation measures were also not forgotten during the construction of the new town hall in Prague 12. Photovoltaics were placed on the roof of the building, a rainwater storage tank under the parking lot, and charging stations for electric cars are located in the parking lot.
Greenery and water features naturally cool the surroundings on hot days and at the same time offer to retain rainwater. An example from Prague is another project of the capital – Les Arborka, which was originally created on agricultural land as part of a larger field. Nové is accessible via a renewed dirt road supplemented by avenues of trees. In a built-up area, where there is not as much as in the countryside, then the missing space can be secured, for example, as a smaller “pocket forest” with 1,000 trees, which were planted by the pupils of Prague’s Jan Werich elementary school.
This year, the Adapterra Awards competition again has five main competition categories (open landscape, built-up areas, work environment, our home and public sympathy award). In addition, the jury awards three special regional awards – projects in Prague, the Czech border and the Austrian border (Upper and Lower Austria).
The winners of the individual categories are decided by the judges, but the Sympathy Award remains in the hands of the public. Online voting lasts until October 15 and supports up to the last two possible projects. The winners of all competition categories will be announced by the Partnership Foundation during a gala evening on November 2, 2022 in Prague.
