Austria, the doctor targeted by death threats commits suicide
Hundreds of people thronged in front of St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna this Monday evening for a vigil in remembrance of Lisa-Maria Kellermayrthe Austrian doctor who took her own life in her office on 29 July.
A suicide that many in Austria have led back to the insults and the threats of death which for months the woman was the object of the most extreme fringes of the no vax movement: on twitter, the friend and the journalist Florian Klenk recalls the bitterness of the woman, who abandoned herself by the authorities, and at the mercy of her stalkers.
Kellermayr herself joked on Twitter, describing her medical office account – studded with insulting messages and comments – as “suddenly no longer private”; but for months, the acquaintances, the second woman in a state of continuous prostration.
Rising to prominence during the pandemic for her calls for vaccination in one of the countries most reticent to anti-covid immunization, the doctor soon became the target of the anger of the most radical anti-vaccine and conspiracy groups.
According to the authorities, Kellermayr explained the reasons for his gesture in a farewell note, the content of which was not disclosed.
