MOLDPRES News Agency – The European Commission transferred the first tranche of macro-financial assistance of 150 million euros for the Republic of Moldova
Chisinau, Aug. 1 /MOLDPRES/. The European Commission received today the first installment of 50 million euros from the macro-financial assistance of 150 million euros for the Republic of Moldova. The announcement was made by MEP Siegfried Mureșan, on a social network, MOLDPRES reports.
According to the official, of the 50 million euros, 35 million are loans under favorable conditions and 15 million are non-refundable European funds. “The macro-financial assistance of 150 million euros was adopted by the European Union to help the Republic of Moldova cover part of its financing needs determined by the management of the refugee crisis, the energy crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic and other consequences of the war . of Russia in Ukraine”, said Siegfried Muresan.
The MEP declared that the payments are due to the smooth running of the program with the International Monetary Fund, as well as the progress made in key areas agreed with the European Union, such as the fight against corruption, the rule of law, good economic governance or energy independence.
“The fact that the first tranche of macro-financial assistance has already been transferred by the European Commission shows that the authorities in Chisinau have done their job and that there is progress in these areas. The money is very useful for the Republic of Moldova, but it is not enough. We need to do more. The Republic of Moldova is the European country that has received the most refugees from Ukraine, in relation to the population, even if the management of refugees has put and still puts a lot of pressure on the country’s economy. That is why we are waiting for new financial support proposals from the European Commission. I am sure that the European Parliament will approve these initiatives as quickly as it also approved macro-financial assistance of 150 million euros”, stressed Siegfried Mureșan.
The European Parliament and the EU Council adopted, on April 6, the decision regarding the granting of macro-financial assistance to the Republic of Moldova. The assistance has two components: 30 million euros – grant and 120 million euros – loan. This will be available for two and a half years and will be disbursed in three installments, in the period 2022-2024.
