Less air pollution, less noise… in Paris, rue Beaubourg is being transformed
A construction site has just started for six months in the rue Beaubourg and the rue Renard at the level of the famous Pompidou center. The objective is to reorganize traffic on these polluted roads, heavily used by cyclists and motorists.
Six months of work to reduce the place of the car. In the future, a single lane will be dedicated to motorists on the southern axis of rue Beaubourg and rue Renard in Paris.
In return, cycle paths and a bus lane will be created. The goal for the town hall of Paris is to facilitate the pedestrian connection between the Center Pompidou and the Marais.
A site of several months, which is not to the taste of these users. “It’s really catastrophic, we can’t drive, we can’t park,” said a biker. “It’s big nonsense,” fumed another driver.
Reduce air pollution and noise pollution
For the mayor of Paris center, the main objective remains the hunt for air pollution on these axes very borrowed by motorists.
“Reducing pollution, reducing noise too, that is to say rebalancing the public space which today is far too devoted to motorized vehicles even though the main means of transport in the center of Paris is on foot. then public transport,” notes Ariel Weil.
The mayor of Paris expects a reduction in road traffic and pollution, especially around the Saint-Merri school, one of the most polluted schools in the capital.
The place of the car still to be rethought?
Some Parisians approve of this policy. “I think it’s very good to widen the lanes for cyclists, to allow better circulation for everyone”, explains a Parisian.
Laure, manager of a café-restaurant, remains skeptical, however. “It’s not changing the roads that will change the problem,” says the trader. According to her, motorists must get used to no longer coming to the center of Paris.
With this project revealed at one and a half million euros, the municipality anticipates the arrival of Limited Traffic Zones (ZTL) in the center of Paris by the end of 2023/beginning of 2024.
