Consumption in LuxembourgDuring the sales, “customers bought differently”
LUXEMBOURG – After four weeks of sales, the assessment drawn up by traders is rather positive.
The summer sales ended on Saturday in the Grand Duchy. It’s time to take stock. “For most traders, it is positive, even though sales started the day after the national holiday. It was not necessarily the right day to start because many people made the bridge and had left for the weekend, ”says Mireille Rahmé-Bley, president of the Commercial Union of the city of Luxembourg (UCVL).
As for customers’ buying habits, merchants have noticed changes. “You can’t say they bought less, but they bought differently, more targeted purchases. They really waited for the discounts,” she adds.
“A complicated context”
On the other hand, “we have not yet reached the levels of 2019”, according to Claude Bizjak, deputy director of the Luxembourg Confederation of Commerce. Blame it on a complicated context, with an increase in the cost of raw materials or products, and generalized inflation. “Even in such a complicated context, the sales remain a moment awaited by the consumer and the merchants and a large part of the consumers take advantage of it to have fun”, he adds.
Mireille Rahmé-Bley is not too worried about traders who have not spent all their stock. “They’re going to continue to offer the items at reduced costs, and then there are the tourists who are back and shopping in stores. What remains of stock can also be sold at the sale which will take place on September 3, 4 and 5”, revealed the president of the UCVL.
