These are very well-preserved marl slabs of the original covering. Currently, the research work is continuing, then it will be revealed on site and covered with a new covering. The importance of this find lies mainly in historical building procedures and the use of building materials.
“The discovery is a beautiful proof that Prague has not yet revealed all its secrets to us. At the same time, I am happy that the builders proceeded with such sensitivity when restoring the rotunda that the find will also be useful to preservationists,” says Jan Chabr, councilor for property management.
In June 2021, the capital city prepared a public contract for the repair of the roof of the Finding of the Holy Cross rotunda, the aim of which was to replace the existing roof structure, carry out an extended restoration survey, repair interior plastering, carry out sheeting, painting or, for example, restore the stone elements of the main cornice and the existing glazing in the top of the dome of the nave.
The selected contractor, as part of the roof repair, first applied the first roof covering and the second, modern coatings of mortar on the bell tower and on the roof of the rotunda itself. Under the layers, however, the original stone covering was unexpectedly found, consisting of very well-preserved rectangular marl slabs. The discovery of this size is completely unique, because historically the marl covering was not completely removed, but was covered by younger layers.
The reconstruction should end this fall, the total cost is 6.3 million crowns including VAT.
Chapel of the Finding of St. The cross standing on the corner of Konviktská and Karolina Světlá streets in Prague 1 is one of the oldest preserved church buildings in the metropolis. The Romanesque building dates from the first half of the 12th century.
