Lengthy post-extinguishing work – playground in Zurich Zoo completely burned down
Playground at Zurich Zoo burned down completely
The straw ball castle playground at Zurich Zoo caught fire in the afternoon. There were no injuries. The post-extinguishing work continued into the evening hours.
A fire broke out in Zurich Zoo on Friday afternoon: the “Strohballenburg” playground in the Lewa Savannah caught fire and burned down completely. There were no injured animals or zoo visitors. The cause of the fire is still unclear.
The emergency call was received at 3:30 p.m., said Protection and Rescue Zurich on Friday evening. As the name suggests, this play building at the Lewa facility was made entirely of straw and therefore burned down within a very short time.
The post-extinguishing work continued into the evening hours, as the message continues. Various small nests of embers consumed themselves in the straw. The emergency services therefore had to tear the straw bales apart and spread the straw out.
The individual ember nests can be located using a thermal imaging camera attached to a drone. The fire brigade then extinguished them individually so as not to ignite further fires. How the fire started is the subject of an investigation.
