The relief service for families with children with medical disabilities, which was launched by the capital in Prague 10 in December, offers round-the-clock operation from today.
The service in ambulatory mode, i.e. without the possibility of children sleeping over, has been running the Paprsek Children’s Center for half a year, a contribution organization of the capital. m of Prague. For continuous operation, it was necessary to structurally modify and re-accredit the existing premises of the Prague 10 district.
“In the past, if parents or caregivers have children with disabilities or autism who needed to go to an operation, for example, or simply needed a break from demanding care, they often had to take their children to facilities in Mladá Boleslav or Náchod. We are paying off this historical debt of the city, and the people of Prague can use a continuous relief service, for which they would not have to commute tens of kilometers, finally also within the territory of Prague,” says Milena Johnová, councilor. m of Prague for the area of social policy and healthcare.
The children’s sleepover enables the extension of the registration of the respite service by the residence form, which was issued to the Paprsek Children’s Center by the Prague municipality this week. For this, it was necessary to make minor construction modifications in the existing premises, which was followed by a building permit issued by the building department of the Prague 10 Municipal District Office.

“We provided a suitable space, helped the municipality with the processing of the documents for its rezoning for housing, invested more than a million crowns in the necessary reconstruction and offered the rental organization Paprsek. I am sincerely happy that we helped create this very necessary and unique service in the capital. The relief service fits well into the mosaic of services provided in the building at U Vršovického nádraží 30/30, which has become a kind of multifunctional health and social center,” says Michal Kočí, councilor of the Prague 10 district for social affairs, healthcare and family policy.

“Care without obstacles, the association of parents of children with combined disabilities, has long been promoting more accessible respite services in Prague. After almost three years of effort, thanks to the cooperation of Milena Johnová, Councilor of the City of Prague for Social Policy, Michal Kočí, Councilor of the Prague 10 Municipal District, Ivana Hejlová, Director of the Paprsek Children’s Center, and parents from the Péče without Obstacles association, families of children with disabilities will finally be able to residential respite services,” describes Jarmila Neuwirth from the association Care without obstacles, adding: “Long-term care is very exhausting, and without respite and other support services, parents risk burnout, social isolation, deterioration of their health, relationship problems and other risks.”
The relief service is provided by the Paprs Children’s Center in the newly renovated premises of a specially adapted apartment in U Vršovického nádraží street. Up to 4 children can use the regular household style service at one time. Over 2,700 children with various types of disabilities live in Prague. Of these, more than a third need very intensive, continuous care. The development of respite services for children, but also for adults, therefore continues to be among the priorities of the capital, as it is a key type of social service that enables families to combine care with other life needs, such as basic rest from demanding care, the opportunity to devote to siblings or other family members or doing things that cannot be done with the child due to his disability, or only very difficult.
The respite service can also help in situations where a parent is temporarily unable to care for their child, e.g. in the event of a medical procedure. Therefore, the Council will m of Prague will soon discuss the overall plan for the development of additional respite care capacities. The goal is to create a network for the citizens of Prague with more than 20 new places in relief services, located in the southern region, the city is now working on.
