Zurich HB“In the Löwenstrasse station it has been smelling terribly for days”
Anyone waiting in Zurich’s Löwenstrasse underground station near the main train station often has to hold their noses at the moment. Several commuters are annoyed by the “disgusting” smell.
Anyone who has often been to Zurich main station knows the phenomenon: in the Löwenstrasse underground station under the main station there is a penetrating stench. According to a news scout, the stench has intensified in the past few days in particular. “It stinks and is really gross. You usually know something like that from subway stations in warm countries.” The worst is the entrances to the underground station. “It’s like a wall.”
Another reader also reports that she feels disturbed by the penetrating smell: “Even on the train it sometimes smells very strong,” says the commuter. It is so uncomfortable for her that she avoids the underground station if it can be arranged. “Especially when it’s as hot as it is now, the smell is extremely disgusting.”
Various people on Twitter are also puzzling over the origin of the stench. “I guess it’s because of the drought. Siphons on the sewers are dry, so the stench comes up from the sewers, »writes a user. Nevertheless, the whole thing is not very pleasant, answers another user. “A lot of people are already wrinkling their noses. It’s now moving up to Shopville.” For him it smells like “cheese feet”, for another person it smells like “binding agent for vomit” or “disgusting cleaning agent”.
SBB refers to daily cleaning
«When it gets hot, you can smell it everywhere, but you don’t have to. SBB isn’t always spared either,” says SBB media spokesman Daniele Pallecchi. “We’re sorry and we bit affected good noses for apologies.” But the scent will pass. “Until then, the SBB asks for a little patience.”
The sources of scent development, meanwhile, could be very different. “For this reason, all surfaces in HB Zurich are cleaned several times a day,” says Pallecchi. Even the track bed is washed several times a week at the underground stations, Museumstraße and Löwenstraße.
