Prague 12 grows “clover” instead of lawns, thus saving part of the mowing costs – Cysnews
Cutting on the “Englishman” is no longer worn. A low lawn in the current heat does not create a pleasant microclimate, does not support biodiversity, and moreover, its maintenance is expensive. Grasses present in a normal lawn, such as ryegrass or sedge, reach a height of up to half a meter. Maintenance of such a lawn requires five or more mowings per year. The cost is not only the mowing of the grass itself, but also the price for storing the mowed grass in the composting plant. Mowers also annoy people with their noise. The city district of Prague 12 wants to solve these aspects by seeding urban areas with other types of herbs, which require less watering and mowing. This year, she is finally “harvesting what she sowed two years ago”.
“Our primary concern is that the surfaces are green. You can ensure much more economical herbs that reach a smaller height and at the same time tolerate drought better. It is, for example, clover, sedge and plantain, the height of which reaches a maximum of 20 cm. That is why the Department of the Environment dosed a mixture of these herbs for a test on 100 hectares of lawn the year before. In this way, we saved at least one mow on planted areas this year,” says Eva Tylová, deputy mayor of the city district.
Planted lawns also bloom beautifully and feed bees and bumblebees. The city district of Prague 12 also this year in June she received an award from the Bee Guard organization, which supports bees.
