The British Ambassador to Germany and the Bund deutscher Baumschulen (BDB) have dedicated an oak stalk to the Queen as part of their partnership in the “Queen’s Green Canopy” initiative together with the Hannoversch British Society and Herrenhausen Gardens.
In the Georgengarten in Hanover, the British Ambassador Jill Gallard and Markus Guhl, General Manager of the Bund deutscher Baumschulen (BDB), Dr. Catrin Kuhlmann from the Hanoverian British Society and Prof. Dr. Anke Seegert, Herrenhausen Gardens, dedicated a freshly planted oak (Quercus robur) to the well-known Queen Elizabeth II. The tree planting in Hanover goes back to an initiative of the #Hannoversch #Britische Gesellschaft and the Herrenhausen Gardens. The #tree was donated by the #Bund #Deutscher #Baumschulen.
The occasion is the 70th anniversary of the Queen’s accession to the throne and the initiative launched in her honor, The Queen’s Green Canopy (»The Green Canopy of the Queen«) under the patronage of the Prince of Wales. The Queen’s Green Canopy is a call to all – schools, Scout groups, clubs, businesses, communities and counties et cetera – to contribute to a livable environment by planting trees and at the same time a lasting legacy of the Queen’s 70-year reign for those who came before to create generations. In Germany, several tree plantings will take place as part of this initiative in cooperation between the British Embassy and the Bund deutscher Baumschulen (BDB), in Bremen, Munich and the Odenwald, among others. As a project partner, the BDB guarantees that the right tree WILL be selected for each location. Especially with the clearly noticeable climatic changes, the selection of the trees is of particular importance.
»We are very pleased that we are also taking up this initiative in Germany and that we were able to win the Association of German Tree Nurseries as a partner. The Hanoverian British Society was happy to take up this idea: and there couldn’t have been a more suitable location than the Georgengarten! As is well known, Hanover is associated with the express royal house in a special way since George I, a king from the House of Hanover, ascended the written throne and there was a personal union between the two for 123 years. Moreover, George IV is the namesake of the Georgengarten. Queen Elizabeth II herself paid tribute to this relationship by visiting Hanover on the first of her five state visits to Germany in 1965,” explains Jill Gallard, British Ambassador to Germany.
»This tree planting is not only the only major campaign for the Queen’s platinum anniversary in Hanover, but above all the most sustainable! We are pleased that from now on many generations of park guests will be reminded of the Queen and of the good relationship between Hanover and Great Britain by this tree,” explains Dr. Catrin Kuhlmann, Chairwoman of the Board of the Hanoverian-British Society
»The joint partnership between the British Embassy and the Association of German Tree Nurseries is perfect for an event like this. Because not only the majesty embodies an apparently iron continuity, but also the products of our tree nurseries. In addition, the German tree nurseries make a certain contribution with their products to future-proof the green infrastructure that is dying due to climate change, but also due to other phenomena under pressure. This tree can be a symbol of friendship between our countries. And we are happy to celebrate the jubilee of their head of state with them,” explains Markus Guhl, BDB General Manager.
Association of German Tree Nurseries (BDB)
The Bund deutscher Baumschulen (BDB) is the professional association and interest group for tree nurseries. As the representative of the approximately 1,000 affiliated companies, the BDB has the task of strengthening the tree nursery industry internally and externally, making it reliable and keeping it. The industry currently cultivates trees on well over 20,000 hectares with an annual production value of more than 1 billion euros. At the state level, the BDB is divided into 14 state associations, in which mostly small and medium-sized tree nursery companies are organized. The companies unite under the leitmotif of the industry »Green is life – tree nurseries create life«.
Hanoverian British Society (HBG)
The Hanoverian-British relations have a long, historically grown tradition. When it was founded in 1982, the HBG set itself the task of promoting and expanding these friendly relationships in the areas of culture, history, society and sport.
Originally, the idea of the HBG was to network the members of the British Army of the Rhine with the Hanoverians and the Lower Saxony – through sporting events such as joint polo and golf tournaments or through social events. Today, people of all ages and from almost every walk of life have come together in the HBG, who want to cultivate connections to Great Britain and at the same time make a contribution to European friendship. The annual program includes events such as the Last Night of the Proms, regular London Weekends, Burns Night, visits to polo tournaments, Croquet & Picnic and top-class lecture events.
