Whereas the groups of the Champions Cup 2022/2023 are now known, we will come back to previous European meetings between teams that will face each other in the new next season. Today, the clash between Saracens and Lyon, future opponents in Pool A, is at the heart of our focus.
Group stage 2018/2019: Saracens 29 Lyon 10
Saracens won twice in Pool 3, picking up a bonus point against Lyon at Allianz Park. Maro Itoje got the ball rolling with a superb try, before tries from Sean Maitland and Brad Barritt allowed Sarries to break even further. Virgile Lacombe crossed the goal line, after a largely played efficiency, to preserve the slim hopes of Lyon 10 minutes from the final whistle. But Alex Lewington sealed the victory for Saracens by scoring the bonus’s fourth try.
Group stage 2018/2019: Lyon 10 Saracens 28
The Saracens repeated their performance at the Matmut Stadium in Gerland, on the fifth day, with an enhanced victory allowing them to reach the quarter-finals. The English scored four tries before the hour mark, Nick Tompkins scoring twice in addition to tries from Jackson Wray and Ben Spencer. Lyon found their way to the Sarries in-goal late in the game, through Alexis Palisson, but their fate was sealed by suffering a fifth consecutive defeat in the group stage.
