Trading on the Prague Energy Exchange (PXE) started 15 years ago
Before July 15 and 17, 2007, trading on the Prague Energy Exchange (PXE) started. Power Exchange Central Europe (PXE), as the company is now called, was established in January 2007 and is headquartered in Prague. It enables electricity trading with a place of delivery in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia and Bulgaria. Since 2016, the majority owner of PXE is the European Energy Exchange (EEX). It owns two thirds of PXE shares, the remaining third belongs to the Prague Stock Exchange.
In addition to the wholesale market, PXE also operates the PARC platform for energy auctions for end customers from cities, municipalities and smaller companies. In 2020, PXE launched the PARC4U web application to facilitate the purchase of electricity and gas as well as the change of supplier for end customers from households and businesses. In addition, in cooperation with the Austrian Central European Gas Hub AG (CEGH) companies, it supports the exchange market for natural gas with a place of delivery at the Czech virtual trading point.
Compared to the result of the trading volume of PXE derivatives on electricity, the values reached only 214 TWh, which was a 23 percent decrease on the previous year. But last year was marked by the pandemic of a new type of coronavirus and the rise in energy prices, which also had a negative impact on the functioning of the market. Due to these extraordinary events, four years of growth in the trading volumes of PXE derivative products were interrupted. The total volume of gas trades reached 28 TWh, which is more than double compared to the previous year.
