A new lake will be created on the summer plain in Prague
The new lake on Prague’s Letenská plain will be built for the capital by the company SMP CZ for 15.6 million crowns without VAT. It follows from the information published in public procurement gazette. The lake will be in the area near the Hanavské pavilion towards the sand area and will be fed by a pump with water from the Vltava.
The area of the new lake will be approximately half a hectare. Water will be pumped into it through one of the three working shafts of Rudolf’s tunnel from the 16th century. One of the reasons for building a new area is the fight against drought. The city is gradually repairing and improving ponds and streams and building water reservoirs.
Part of the new pond will be an island, which can be reached via a wooden jetty. According to the information provided by the Forests of the City of Prague, which, among other things, take care of water areas and construction for the municipality, the construction should be completed in the fall of this year. The lake will not be primarily intended for swimming, which will only be possible there at your own risk.
According to earlier information from the municipality, Prague owns 85 ponds with an area of 120 hectares. Another 20 ponds of 30 hectares are owned by private individuals. The city also owns 32 retention reservoirs, seven dry polders, 28 rainwater reservoirs and four large water works, such as the Hostivařská dam or Džbán.
At the end of last year, Prague councilors approved a set of rules to help fight the drought. In its projects, the city is supposed to minimize concreted areas, instead of which spaces with permeable surfaces should be created. Greenery is to be planted on the roofs of the buildings, which will use water, improve the city’s environment and cool it down at the same time.
The document is based on the climate plan approved last year, according to which the city is to invest approximately 230 billion crowns by 2030 in measures aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions in the metropolis.
