According to news according to the administration on the website of the Prague Zoo, it weighed 1,450 grams after birth and measured 54 centimeters, which are sufficient birth rates for earls. He drinks breast milk from his mother Kvída on his own and is active according to the breeders. For the peace of the cub and mother, their immediate exposure is covered.
“We welcomed the little rascal into the world at 9:12 on Sunday, the birth was quick, I think he got his first drink from his mother at noon and now he is trying to find himself in the space of one to two hours. We don’t know his gender yet, it will only be revealed by DNA analyzes from the collected fur,” said the director of the garden, Miroslav Bobek. He can be proud of the new addition, because raising grebes in human care is quite demanding. That is also why breeders supervise both the cub and the mother in the first days, according to which the first four days of life are crucial for successful rearing.
Seventeen-year-old Kvída has so far successfully raised three cubs, and according to ungulate curator Barbora Dobiášová, she takes care of her current offspring above the standard for her species. More often he lies down to drink, he licks it and thus stimulates urination. The father of the current cub is again thirteen-year-old Draco.
The first joint offspring, who was named Kito and lives today in a Danish zoo, was successfully bred seven years ago. In 2015, a female Nyota was born, who now lives in the Olomouc Zoo. In 2018, the female Sawa, currently living in the Shepreth Wildlife Park in Great Britain, became the third bred cub.
As breeders explain, this African mammal is active mainly at night, it sleeps in its burrow during the day. It uses its strong claws to obtain food from termite mounds and anthills. Squirrels live solitary lives, which is why, apart from the mating season, the female Kvída and the male Draco also live separately in the Prague Zoo. You can visit the upper one even now in the Africký dům pavilion in the part of the complex.
