Disaster figures for nursing education in Denmark
In total, the number of applicants for the four major welfare educations has fallen by 19 percent in 2022. This includes pedagogy, social worker and teacher educations.
Poor pay is the reason
– Many are worried about the working conditions, and whether it requires them to build up a personal resilience to be able to work in a health care system under pressure, says Charlotte Gøtstad Sørensen, spokesperson for the Danish nursing students.
– They want a working life where you can make everyday life cohesive, also financially. Unfortunately, this causes many to opt out of nursing education, she says.
Must become more attractive
Both the deputy head and the student head are calling for initiatives that make the young people want to apply for the education. They say it’s working conditions and recognition it’s about. Salary is crucial.
– You will not find a more rewarding profession with greater opportunities to make a concrete difference for other people every day. But the work is not borne by the salary itself, and especially not when the conditions become such that you no longer have the opportunity to do the different you are trained for, says Dorthe Boe Danbjørg.
The numbers from the Danish Agency for Education and Research shows that there is a general decrease of 15 percent for all types of education. The number of students taking sabbaticals is increasing, and this may be one explanation.
