Meloni in Strasbourg with Fiala and Metsola. Conservative leader bolsters European alliances – EURACTIV.com
6e In July, Giorgia Meloni arrives in Strasbourg to meet the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, and the Czech Prime Minister, Petr Fiala. The president of Fratelli d’Italia and the Party of European Conservatives and Reformists continues her path to consolidate her position on the European stage during a series of meetings with EU leaders.
His presence alongside Fiala on the day when the Czech Prime Minister presented the priorities of the Czech presidency to the plenary shows the undeniable relevance of the links between European conservatives.
Giorgia Meloni then reiterated the gratitude of the European conservative family for the initiative taken last March by Fiala himself, alongside the Polish and Slovenian premieres Morawiecki and Jansa, the first among European leaders to travel to kyiv and express their support and closeness to Ukrainians.
Meloni and Fiala underlined the common position of strong support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Energy and food security issues were put on the table for discussion, while the EP plenary vote confirmed the inclusion of natural gas and nuclear energy in the EU taxonomy,
Meloni and Fiala agreed that independence from Russian gas can only be achieved by respecting each member state’s choices on its energy mix. This can be done by promoting joint investment in infrastructure and technological research, and above all by putting aside the ideological tensions which could cause enormous damage to European companies and which could lead the “Old Continent” towards new dependencies on -to unreliable nations.
Giorgia Meloni expressed her strong appreciation for the five priorities of the Czech Presidency, which aim to conduct the work of the Council of the EU in a spirit of pragmatism and realism on all important fronts: “The Czech Presidency – said Meloni – is a great opportunity for us to open a debate on issues that can no longer be postponed, such as energy supply, the humanitarian crisis and immigration. FdI and the ECR group will play an important role thanks to the pragmatism that defines us. I see the taxonomy vote as a good demonstration of that pragmatism.” It was a logical link between Meloni and the leader of the ODS party which, along with Fratelli d’Italia, is part of the Party of European Conservatives and Reformists.
A very good connection, which was not so obvious, was that with the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola, EPP candidate, even though she was also elected with the support of the ECR group.
The meeting took place in a positive atmosphere with personal esteem and reciprocal sympathy between the two young women who, in their respective roles, are committed to the cause of the future of Europe. The meeting symbolized the next step in a political journey, which began with the election as Vice-President of Roberts Zile, who fully re-admitted European Conservatives to play an important role in the EP”. Finally, Meloni underlined Roberta Metsola’s courage and determination in the Ukrainian crisis.
Once again and without a doubt, Giorgia Meloni’s trip to Strasbourg was a positive one; indeed, in a few hours and with an agenda worthy of a Prime Minister, she succeeded in denying the vulgate that would see her isolated at the international level.
