Youth unemployment in Brussels at historically low level | Brussels
BrusselsThe figures for youth unemployment in Brussels are below the threshold of 20 percent unemployment in June. This is evident from figures from Actiris, the Brussels employment agency. These are the lowest figures in at least 15 years.
19.4 percent of Brussels residents under the age of 25 are currently unemployed. That is a historically low figure. Only last year did the unemployment rate fall below 20 percent. “During this period, we usually see lower figures,” explains Jan Gatz, Actiris’ clearer. “The establishments of young people as job seekers start in August. But we can indeed speak of historically low levels.”
“We notice that the impact of the Covid crisis was not too bad,” says Gatz. “There are a lot of employers looking to hire people now. We see a record number of vacancies. People find a job faster than a few years ago.”
The future for the Brussels labor market looks quite positive at the moment. “Over the years, we attracted an average of between 100,000 and 110,000 job seekers. Now there are about 85,000. For young people there was between 12,000 and 13,000. Now the numbers are below 7,500. There may be a greater need for specialized profiles in the future, but at the moment the situation looks quite favourable.”
