Watch: Rat infestation persists at Birkirkara Hill in St. Julian’s
For several months now, Birkirkara Hill in St. Julian’s has been plagued by a rat infestation.
The rats, some of which grew as small as cats, roam freely on the sidewalks on both sides of the road.
The problem started several months ago when work began on a residential complex across the street from The Malta Independent offices, with the works appearing to be disrupting (or perhaps attracting) a nest of rats.
Despite the fact that the project was completed a few months ago and the area cleaned up, the infestation continues unabated, with rats often seen feeding from garbage bags that are often left outside on the sidewalks for hours.
Pesky rodents seem to ignore people and traffic and can often be seen crossing the road more and more, crawling under parked cars and sniffing people’s doorsteps.
Residents said it was outrageous that such scenes were witnessed in a place like St. Julian’s, which is a popular city for Maltese and tourists.
St. Julian’s Mayor Albert Buttigieg said it was good to point out irresponsible tenants, and explained that recycling bags would only be collected on Tuesdays. “As long as the government continues to reject our call for enforcement, the problem will remain so.”
