Luigi Ghirri (Scandiano 1943 – Roncocesi 1992) was an Italian artist now internationally recognized as one of the great masters of contemporary photography. His photographic work has been widely exhibited and published, and is preserved in private and public collections around the world, including MoMA (New York), Cabinets des Estampes-Bibliothèque Nationale (Paris), CSAC (Study Center and Archive of Communication , Parma), MaXXI Museum of XXI Century Arts (Rome) and Art Institute of Chicago (Chicago).
The postal series reproduces some works of the 1973 Atlante photographic project. It is Ghirri’s pivotal work for the recoding of the signs belonging to the concept of landscape in the photography of the 70s and with which he makes his own “imaginary journey” in place that is cancellation of the trip itself. Through the process of abstraction carried out by photography, the pages of a simple geographical atlas lose their descriptive function and the work thus conceived offers the possibility of adding signs to the fantastic world: the real, its conventional representation in this case seem to coincide. , the formulation of the problem shifts to that of the imagination.
