348 cases of Monkeypox confirmed in Portugal – Rádio Boa Nova
Another 20 cases of human infection with the Monkeypox virus were confirmed in Portugal, increasing the total number of cases to 34, according to the Directorate-General for Health (DGS) this Friday.
According to the DGS, “most infections have been reported, to date, in Lisbon and Vale do Tejo, but there are also records of cases in the North, Alentejo and Algarve regions”. Those infected are men aged between 19 and 61, “most of them under 40”.
The new cases were confirmed by the Instituto Nacional de Saúde Doutor Ricardo Jorge (INSA) and “they remain in clinical follow-up, and are stable”.

It also adds that “the information collected from surveys and epidemiological studies is contributing to the assessment of the outbreak at a national and international level” and that “the situation continues at a national level in conjunction with the institutions”.
The disease manifests itself in features that may resemble chickenpox. Symptoms are ulcerative deficiencies, rash, palpable lymph nodes, eventually accompanied by fever, chills, headache, pain and tiredness. Monkeypox is of the Orthopoxvirus genus (the best known is the smallpox virus) and the disease is transmitted through contact with animals, close contact with infected people or with contaminated materials.
