Andorra closes traffic on the last stretch of road to Coma de Arcalís
Andorra has long been betting heavily on establishing itself as a top-level cycling destination and every year more opportunities open up to enjoy the Pyrenean country on pedals.
The bet continues this 2022 and as of Thursday, June 23, the Arcalís road will once again be dedicated exclusively to cycling. Every day, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., you can go up to La Coma without having to worry about finding motorized traffic.
This is not just any pass… 10 kilometers of ascent with an average incline of 7% and 724 meters of unevenness La Coma de Arcalís has been the end of a stage several times in the Vuelta a España and three times in the Tour de France. The last one in 2016, with an epic win by Tom Dumoulin in the rain after a long breakaway.
Cyclists will be able to enjoy the last 4.5 kilometers of the port, its toughest section, where the descent will increase to more than 8% of the means along various hairpin bends made for suffering. A movie ascent that is crowned above 2,200 meters of altitude.
Andorra was already a pioneer in 2019 where this initiative was born, turning Coma de Arcalís into the first stage finish of a Tour de France that closed the way to traffic to turn it into an exclusively cycling area. Three years later this initiative is still more alive than ever. If you like cycling and you are close to the Andorran country, you have a mandatory appointment with Coma de Arcalís this summer.
