Vienna is the most liveable city in the world, Milan 49th
AGI – Vienna is once again the most liveable in the world and takes first place in the 2022 index drawn up by the Economist to define the classification of the cities where you live best in the world. Among the Italians, Milan is in 49th place and does better than New York in 51st and Beijing in 71st. The decline of the Spanish metropolises is surprising: Madrid loses 24 positions and slips to 43rd place, Barcelona retreats from 16th to 35th place.
Germany is on the rise with Frankfurt seventh, Hamburg 16th and Dusseldorf 22nd, all climbing around thirty positions. After 2018 and 2019, the capital of Austria is for the third time at the top of the index drawn up by the “Economist Intelligence Unit” (Eiu), the research and analysis unit of the English weekly, taking into consideration the cities thoughtful “business destinations”, economic and financial centers or with a high demand for visitors.
The city of the Prater snatches the primacy from New Zealand’s Auckland, which has lost 33 seats due to the extension of the anti-Covid lockdowns. Experts rewarded Vienna’s stability, its cultural and entertainment offer and health care, as well as the quality of the factors with the maximum score of 100 out of 100. The cultural and environmental are almost ideal.
Europe dominates the top 10
Europe largely dominates the Top 10 with six cities: Copenhagen and Zurich, completing the podium behind Vienna, Geneva, Frankfurt seventh and Amsterdam ninth. Canada also did well: Calgary finished third in addition, followed by Vancouver in fifth and Toronto in eighth.
Japan’s Osaka and Australia’s Melbourne shared 10th place. Paris is 19th, 23 positions higher than last year, and Brussels 24th, just behind Canadian Montreal.
Beirut, devastated by a port explosion in 2020 and grappling with the crippling Lebanese financial crisis, has not been included in the classification of business destinations. Not even the Ukrainian capital Kiev, after the Russian invasion of February 24 forced the Eiu to interrupt its reconnaissance of the city. Moscow, for its part, loses 15 positions and slips to 80th place. Increased censorship accompanies the ongoing conflict, “the report notes.” Russian cities are also seeing restrictions on culture and the environment due to Western economic sanctions.
Other Eastern European centers were considered stable due to “increased less diplomatic tensions” at the war in Ukraine. The war-torn capital of Syria, Damascus city, has retained its place as the least livable on the planet.
