ALL ANTWERP. “During corona I dreamed that I was a bobsled athlete. Now I have a skeleton license in my pocket” (Antwerp)
Every weekday our reporter and photographer pick a casual passer-by off the street for a nice conversation. Want everyone has a story. And certainly in Antwerp. Today: Didier Van den Broeck (31).
“During corona I had a dream that I was a bobsled athlete. I then sent an email to the Belgian Federation for Bobsleigh and Skeleton in which I said that I top form used to be. It took way too long for them to realize something wasn’t right. Long story short: I now have a skeleton license in my pocket and am part of the Belgian Blizzards team.”
“Skeleton of bobsleigh because you go with your head first. Last winter I went down for the first time. In Winterberg in Germany. And in three days I leave for Königssee. I’m training super hard now. Especially on sprinting and on geometry. Because you first have to run hard with the sled in your hand and then jump on it. What is my goal? Make sure I get all the way down. Because that goes really fast, you go down at 140 kilometers per hour with your chin just above the ice. I only did it a few times in the end but I just think it’s fantastic.”
“I just play basketball for relaxation. I own cocktail bar Dogma a little further down the road. I have a chaotic agenda and in between I come to throw 15 minutes at the goal as a relaxation. When it gets to baskets, I’m very untalented, but I like it.”
