Car thief wanted to break into a Zurich police car
A car thief chose the wrong vehicle. After an attempted break-in into a civilian patrol car in Zurich, the handcuffs clicked.
At around 9 p.m. on Saturday, a man wanted to break into a civilian Zurich city police vehicle that was parked unlocked on Redingstrasse. When the suspected car thief noticed that another person was getting caught inside the car, he abandoned his plan and walked on.
The man in the vehicle was an investigator from the Zurich city police. He drew his colleagues in and they followed the man. The man tried the door handles on several parked vehicles on his way to test whether they were parked unlocked.
He went to a private garage on Rainstrasse, where he found an unlocked car, opened it and searched it. However, he didn’t get far. The investigators grab the man as he leaves the garage and handcuff him.
The 41-year-old had other items with him that could also have come into his possession from theft. The man from Sri Lanka was taken to a police station for further clarification and then handed over to the Zurich public prosecutor. (gf)
