Na Františku Hospital: Development – new hall, CT, gynecology and possibly a police station
During the reign of the former mayor of Prague 1, Pavel Čižinský (Prague 1 to himself), from the end of 2018 to the beginning of 2020, Na Františku Hospital almost passed under the administration of the capital. The agreement was a step short. “We have clearly stated that we will not give up, it will continue to be held by the city district of the hospital,” says Petr Hejma (STAN), mayor of Prague 1. The city district counts on budgets with an operating contribution of 74 million to the current long-term financial coverage of the operation, but in the future requires economic self-sufficiency.
Hospitals for everyone
At the same time, even in 2018, it seemed that the hospital would be transformed into follow-up care instead of acute care. The current main goal of Petr Hejma and the hospital director David Erhart is to remelter the facility in a central family-type hospital. It should not only work for the citizens of Prague 1, who make up only a fraction of patients, but for all Praguers. “We want the hospital to be part of Prague’s health infrastructure,” adds the mayor of Prague 1.
In the future, all examinations and other health services will be provided in the medical facility. In addition, on Wednesday, June 15, the Prague City Council1 provides a proposal to create a concept for 2022 to 2026. The director recalls that in mid-July 2019, when he was entrusted with the management of the hospital, the long-term concept was missing.
“It was also a sign of a situation where some departments were closed down and others rebuilt,” recalls David Erhart. Since 2012, the hospital has had about 200 acute beds, reducing their number to the current 113. For follow-up care is 59 beds.
Big plans
“We survived the clinical death, we have stabilized a bit, but now, of course, it will take another year for the development and rescue of the hospital to succeed and to create space in Prague 1 to provide health care,” says David Erhart. The current management managed to achieve the REACT-EU grant title, which donated 149 million crowns to the hospital for the development of the hospital’s hospital equipment. For example, the hospital bought a brand new CT device for 37 million crowns, which passes around 2.5 thousand patients a year.
“We have a development area right on the hospital premises,” informs the mayor. This is a plot of land between the hospital and the hotel. I anticipate that a new hospital building will be built here soon. Prague 1 will start working on an urban consideration of what building to build on the new territory. The director would like to see an emergency reception in the new building with an ambulance exit point.
The establishment of the 3rd operating room was successfully enforced at the Prague 1 City Council on Wednesday, June 15. “And then there is a canned ARO not far from us. We want to restore the 6 beds where they used to be until 2011, “ comments the director. A great novelty was also the establishment of a gynecological department and the opening of a gynecological clinic in April 2022.

Problems with patients
For the sake of employee safety, the director would also like it if part of the new building serves as a service for the MP or the Police. “The number of aggressive actions of our clients varies. So far, we haven’t had any attacks, not even a firearm, but I see that again as one of the points for the next period. We need to strengthen the protection of staff in the institutional emergency service, “adds David Erhart.
There are many nightlife venues around the hospital, from which drunken aggressive tourists often travel to the hospital. The proportion of foreigners from the ambulance is 32 percent, which is the highest ratio in the wider area. Head Nurse Hana Veselá also has similar experience with dangerous patients.
“It’s not just aggressive drunk tourists who will of course also be found,” Hana comments. Problems also recur in homeless patients. “Even if they should be hospitalized, they will sign your reverse and we will have them again the next day. Of course, five friends will come with them, who endanger our medical staff, “ adds. In addition, aggressive clients can bring knives or pistols and the staff does not have a way to find out.
