“Unesco cities and territories: Siena meets MateraWas the title of the conference which was held in recent days in the Monumental Complex of Santa Maria della Scala in Siena.
Organized by the Town Planning Department of the Municipality of Siena in collaboration with the Lucani Association of Siena, the event was moderated by the Honorary President of the Lucani Association of Siena Domenico Benevento.
The greetings of the mayor of Siena Luigi De Mossi and the President of the municipal council Marco Falorni were followed by the interventions of:
- Francesco Foschino (researcher of History of the territory),
- Paolo Giuliani (Urban Planning Manager of the Municipality of Siena),
- Francesco Michelotti (Councilor for Urban Planning of the Municipality of Siena),
- Antonio Nicoletti (director of Apt Basilicata),
- Giovanni Oliva (director of Matera Basilicata 2019 Foundation),
- Annateresa Rondinella (coordinator of the Institutional Relations Commission for Unesco Italian Chairs).
The interventions, after having highlighted the urban transformations of the city of the Sassi from the postwar period to today and the effects produced in the Lucanian territory by the winning of the candidacy a European Capital of Culture 2019highlighted the unprecedented points of contact between the cities of Matera and Siena and the common desire to intensify synergies and actions between the two cities and its institutions in the field cultural and economic also using important opportunities offered by Unesco.
During the meeting the Director Oliva he has declared:
“For us it is a great pride than one southern city can be called upon to tell about its development path from a prestigious city like Siena.
In recent years, our cities have shared the exciting candidacy for the title of European Capital of Culture 2019 and it is precisely from culture that we now want to restart our collaboration ”.
