“Medio Etruria” station to reach high speed, the best service area is sought for the areas involved
Siena City Council, in the session of last June 10, Luca Micheli presented a question on the need for an infrastructure that connects the territories of southern Tuscany to high-speed rail.
In his illustration, the councilor said that for some time now there has been an interregional discussion on the construction of the Middle Etruria Station, and that, in recent months, the Presidents of the Tuscany and Umbria Regions have met to reaffirm and relaunch the need for this ‘works for the economic and social development of the so-called “middle Italy”. Importance reaffirmed with specific acts also by some municipal councils such as that of Arezzo, as well as by the President of Confindustria Toscana Sud who underlined the urgency of a definitive project.
Considering that in the past this planning has found a strong brake on the part of the candidate territories and that the solution has already been entrusted to a technical commission and that today this path seems to be retraced, Micheli stressed the need to move from the study phase to that effective with the inclusion in the National Transport and Logistics Plan, attached to the Economic and Financial Document (DEF) in the next annual update. Adding that the Region has also included the electrification of the Siena-Chiusi line in its infrastructural planning. In light of all this, the councilor asked what initiatives had been undertaken in terms of solicitation and collaboration with the other Municipalities and Provinces concerned in order to define the project for the Medio Etruria station.
The deputy mayor informed the classroom that the Administration has spoken on several levels on this fundamental issue of which he shares the strategic importance and importance, as was emphasized by the questioner. For this reason, the Mayor spoke both with the administrators of the municipalities of the Sienese belt, including Monteriggioni, Monteroni and Sovicille, about the efficiency of the railway network and the future Medio Etruria high-speed station, and with the Umbria Region. , as the network can serve not only the area of southern Tuscany, but also Umbria, in order to plan more quickly the investments necessary for this work. The principle shared by all these actors is to identify an area that can be of service to all these areas, namely: the Sienese area with the belt around the Municipality, that of Arezzo and the Umbria Region. Once the audience has been defined, we will move towards the choice of the area that holds together the needs of these subjects and where areas converge, also because a motorway connection or similar is necessary to reach the station. The area for the construction of the Middle Etruria has not yet been chosen, he continued, but for Siena, the best one will be the one served by the Siena Bettolle motorway junction or at most a continuation of a few km further beyond the administrative border of ours. province.
Micheli said he was satisfied with the sharing of views but would like an acceleration, given that Siena’s need is to be able to reach the high-speed train in less than an hour. A strategic solution to avoid the risk of being cut off from the world. The battle must be made to include this project in the logistics plan and therefore in the economic and financial planning document, without focusing only on a province. He concluded by reiterating the importance of creating this station without parochialism, given that the GDP of a medium-small city like Siena depends on its ability to be attractive and close to major connections.
