The capital, in cooperation with Creative Prague, has prepared a Manual for organizing events in public space. This is to make work easier for anyone who wants to borrow part of the square or street from the city.
“People live well in places where people like to spend time together and together. On behalf of the city, we want to support Praguers who want to organize a neighborhood meeting, flea market or theater performance for children on the beach in their neighborhood. Thanks to Man, people will no longer have to go a long time, but easily and clearly find out where and how they will apply for or what permission, “says Hana Třešíková, councilor of the capital. m of Prague for culture and tourism.

Public spaces are meant to serve people and their needs. Prague wants to encourage residents to make the most of public spaces. However, obtaining all permits for an organized event is a complex process that can discourage many people. In addition, each city district may have different rules, and finding city information on city websites can be difficult. The manual at https://verejnyprostor.praha.eu/ will therefore provide a brief guide to anyone who wants a neighborhood or cultural event in public space to the maximum. The website will also help those who are dealing with front gardens or building occupations.
Candidates will learn step by step on the just launched website how to proceed with the necessary requirements. The manual clearly explains where to submit an application, how long it may take to process it or what the fees are for each type of event. We also managed to gather information on how occupation applications work in individual districts.
“We want Praguers to feel as good as possible in the streets and squares of their city. That is why we try to remove various obstacles from public space, build new transitions and make sure that they work well even in small things. We also remove unsightly advertisements or questionable sites. At the same time, we want to encourage Praguers not to be afraid to inhabit and use the city, “says Adam Scheinherr, Deputy Mayor of Prague. m of Prague for transport, which is also responsible for monument care.
The project to support the organization of events in public space is linked to strategies for the development of culture in localities and public spaces, which the capital has long been pushing for in cooperation with Creative Prague and tries to motivate the city and active residents to revitalize public space in places where there is often traditional cultural institutions are lacking.
“I am glad that in Creative Prague, in cooperation with the capital, we have created a tool that can help active people throughout Prague to make public space more cultural. Culture is where people are, not closed in institutions. On behalf of Creative Prague, I very much welcome the support of local actors in their ideas, “adds Petr Peřinka, director of the Creative Prague organization.
Living in a public space and neighborhood meetings at cultural events, but the city district can also be actively supported. The capital is therefore updating the Cultural COMPASS. This document, which was again created in cooperation with Kre Prague, a set of simple and often financially inexpensive steps °, which the district office can only support the development of culture and community in its territory. Cultural KOMPAS can be downloaded HERE and is intended for representatives of city authorities´ (political representatives and officials), in the area of responsibility is culture, common life and neighborly relations.
However, it should bring the greatest benefits to local actors – it should reduce barriers to providing the necessary information (especially about the financial and non-financial background provided) and provide contacts to those responsible. Setting a standard will save time for an often overburdened office, open it up to local actors and make cultural opportunities and environments clear to all involved, ie city districts, actors and locals. Last year, cooperation took place with Prague 3 and Prague 22, this year Creative Prague cooperates with Suchdol and Zbraslav.
The capital cultivates and enlivens public space and other projects, such as Prague chairs and tables or Prague pancakes. Prague chairs and tables are used to enjoy public space and stabilize the residential function of squares, parks, courtyards or to occupy hitherto unused places in public space with the help of urban furniture. Compared to classic furniture, Prague chairs differ in that they are portable, so people can move with them in space according to their needs and program. Until the pilot season in 2016, there are 6 locations. In 2021, the number of localities grew to 85, but the interest was even greater – a record 120 administrators were interested in participating in the project. From the total number of 89 tables and 327 chairs in 2016, the number of furniture this year has expanded to 504 tables, 1,934 chairs and 20 deck chairs.
The Prague Placks project was originally an extension of the Prague Chairs and Tables project and its intention is to quickly and cheaply test the change in the functions of various public areas. The existing functions of the public space (eg car park or empty square) will be changed or expanded for a temporary period, the space is “inhabited” by Prague chairs and tables, or other furniture, and supplemented by various types of cultural or community program. In this way, the functionality of another model of the functioning of the given space is tested and subsequently evaluated. From 2022, the Prague Placks project is to be piloted in city districts together with the Cultural Compass project. These two originally separate projects will thus support the development of community culture by combining conceptual work (Cultural Compass) with concrete implementation (Prague Placks). Last year, the Plácek project took place in Prague 22 in Uhříněves, this year it will be in Zbraslav.
