Photobastei Zurich
Today the Photobastei handed over its petition “for a future of the Photobastei” with 3887 signatures to Mayor Corine Mauch. Attached and below you will find the press photo of the presentation.
With the petition, the Photobastei asks the city of Zurich to help them in their search for new extensions and to support the cultural institution with an annual subsidy.
In the short time it has existed since 2014, the Photobastei has advanced to become a dazzling cultural institution in the city of Zurich that has national and international appeal. It has firmly established itself among the population as a photographic museum, as well as an exhibition space for artists, professionals and amateurs, as an experimental art location, as well as a low-threshold, open multi-disciplinary house, as a concert and party venue. It is hard to imagine the cultural offerings of the city of Zurich today without it.
The Photobastei will have to leave Sihlquai at the end of December 2024. The building will then give way to the new construction of the cantonal education mile. Completely on their own, the Photobastei, together with more than 3500 signatories, turned to Mayor Corine Mauch in a petition for help and support:
She asks for the city of Zurich
- to actively support the Photobastei in finding a solution close to the center or to look for a new location together with the Photobastei
- To prefer a ground-level variant and in particular to examine the integration of the Photobastei into the barracks area in Zurich
- to financially support the Photobastei in moving and renovating at the new location
- to recognize the Photobastei’s commitment to the city’s cultural life and to support it with an annual and unlimited operating contribution of at least CHF 200,000.
The city of Zurich now has 6 months to respond to the petition.
