Ewa Rąbek: How long have you been living in Austria?
Permanently for 10 years, but my adventure with Australia begins 12 years ago.
How?
Quite an accident. After graduating from England, where I studied early childhood education, during a trip to Thailand, at one of the boy’s Asian airports. I literally exchanged a few sentences with him. We kept in touch via the Internet until the end of six months, we met in Austria. We got married, then our children were born …
Are you on maternity leave now?
Yes. Our four-year-old son had a sister a few months ago.
And by giving birth to a child before birth?
At the beginning of my Australian initiative, I was still working in a kindergarten, then I planned to work as a teacher, but after working with children for several years, I saw this time. I got a job at a hospital, in administration, where we work in medical records. After a year, she was promoted to supervisor, and that’s what I’m on now.
Maternity leave in Austria is as long as the one in Poland …
Yes. You are only a dozen weeks and you put your money on the allowance and issue additional publications. Weekly to about $ 700, or about 2,000. zloty.
It’s not too bad, is it?
For Polish conditions, yes, but life in the application is more expensive.
Eighteen weeks with the baby was short enough. How does it look in practice?
The women are scheming. I work for a week in the organization and I have an additional weekly paid leave, an additional 14 days from the order for 28 days from the threshold. This is what I decided to do. Some of the familiar extending maternity leave by taking the use of vacation leave or the so-called long business leavewhich applies on the date of work experience. For me, it is available after working years, and with each result of work, a year and a paid week. I also have friends who returned to work quickly, leave the children under the care of their grandparents or send them to kindergarten.
Are Australian ones really that expensive?
Yes. Quite an expense. Calculated, they cost about PLN 300 per day. It all depends on the area and city. In Sydney, a friend paid PLN 450 a day. The government of some of these provisions, in Art.
What does paternity leave look like?
they prefer to get two weeks off from the government, also for the national minimum. The few companies that give you extra time off. My first place on first place could have had two weeks of full-paying paternal account, second place in the same company, which has already had three weeks.
Your babies came to a world in orbit where you also had to go on both pregnancies. How does care for a pregnant woman look like?
I gave birth in the company of the company, whether I was very satisfied with the plant. Here, if the pregnancy is without complications, the future mother is a midwife, not a doctor.
Women have a choice of several methods of removal for removal. Which one did you decide on?
At the first stop, the so-called joint care – I was looked after by a home doctor specializing in obstetrics and by midwives in the hospital, during a visit to the hospital with only one detainee. On the second, compare with the program Group practice of midwivesthat is the midwife assigned to me, who looked after me throughout my pregnancy and gave birth. It was a former Polish woman. Another midwife from her team took over when she was on leave or fell ill. For a really nice system. It was very important because it was a pandemic, because the midwife would come to my house when it suited me, I didn’t have to go to the clinic for blood tests or results. It made me feel safe when there was a lot of alarmavirus in Brisbane. An additional advantage is the possibility of contact with midwives around the clock.
How do you remember the Postnatal Care?
Very good. The one during the birth itself was also great: excellent equipment, large comfortable room, you can choose from. I remember that the first time the intimate atmosphere was created by candles, the second time – lamp salt. Everything is provided by the midwives, there is one thing they care about such details. There was someone with me throughout the entire delivery, and I was not alone for a minute. When my midwife took a break, she was replaced by another one. All the time they calmly explained to me what was happening, they cheered me up and assured me that I was doing well. From the beginning of the uprising, what anesthesia are available and I gave birth as I was comfortable. I really wish every woman to be born in such conditions.
What’s next?
After the delivery they looked after me and the baby every four, they were available to every referrer. Every time someone new with access to the medical service came to my room, they introduce themselves culturally and talk about what will happen step by step. Everyone showed a lot of concern.
Do you remember what you got to eat after giving birth?
Not sure! After the first visit to the main point and at certain times, it was possible to make a call, I wanted to call, I just wanted to give the number. There were delicious eggs and bacon for breakfast, salad and burger for lunch, and a brownie with ice cream for dessert. In the additional hospital, the food was also very good. For breakfast, cereals with milk, fruit, hot roll with jam, and for lunch, soup, chicken in a sauce with vegetables and also fruit. For this coffee or tea.
Does your little son speak Polish?
I speak Polish to him, but when he was one year old, he went to kindergarten. So he has contact with your settings and is still mixing them up.
Does your husband visit Poland?
I’ve been two or three times.
Did he like it?
He likes Polish food very much. He also claims that Poles smile less than Australians and he lacks this smile with us. I also can’t get used to the lack customer service, i.e. taking care of good quality of customer service. In shops, shops, bars and offices you can always hear the cheerful Hey how are you and people create with each other. They ask someone’s day or what they did on the weekend. Like a talking cloth, but it can cheer you up and make you remove yourself.
And what is the most beautiful thing for you?
It is quite burdensome with geographical isolation. Flights to Europe are very long, and for almost two years, the available borders are closed due to the pandemic. We were grounded. Now they would be, they would not be, but this is also probably the effect of building a tag service center during the war …
Do you miss something
I’m used to living here and outside of my family and employees, I really miss nothing. I used to miss bread and other food, but there are several shops in Brisbane with shops, they are even Polish in making magazines and types of Polish pastries. I miss a bit of changes in summer evenings (even in summer it gets dark at 7.00 p.m.) and local shops that you could go to. In the case of shopping, it is traditionally done in large centers to which you have to go by car.
And do you remember when you felt that Australia was already your home?
Yes. It was only a few years after my move that I called this place home. I came back from holidays in Poland and I felt that I wanted to continue my life at this end of the world. The beginnings, when everything was new and I had a lack of friends, were hard. My first friends appeared in my life when they joined the Polish dance team. I started meeting them after rehearsals, and I got to know new people. In Brisne I already have quite a group of them, and two children and now forced, I do not have time to see them.
However, you did find him to write and publish a book. What is it about?
I manage the blog and its readers repeatedly wrote to me that they would read something more than entries on the web. I decided to write my experiences of moving into the world, observations of the everyday life of Ostralians and end of descriptions of places that have been achieved from the point of view. Yes Road to my austriawhich I also published myself.
Do you think you need to come back to Poland permanently?
I do not think about that. Here, and I have no need to get along well with my life. Brisbane is a beautiful city with wonderful nature and plenty of activities for families with children.
