Liberation at the Austrian Open in Innsbruck
Taekwondo At the Austrian Open, taekwondo fighter Madeline Folgmann won the silver medal after a long period of weakness. The girl from Nettetal will now build on this success. Next up is the Grand Prix in Rome.
Taekwondo fighter Madeline Folgmann from TG Jeong Eui Nettetal has ended her dry spell and won the silver medal at the Austrian Open in Innsbruck. Highly motivated, she traveled to the competition in Austria: “I wanted to pick up the momentum for the Grand Prix next weekend in Rome,” says the 25-year-old with a smile and full of confidence for the next tasks.
After a walk-through, the first seeded girl from Nettetal defeated Sara Mouch from the Netherlands. Their techniques found their target on the vest and head protection, so that at the end of the second round the fight was decided early with 22:1. In the round of 16, the semi-finals of this year’s German championships were repeated against Asli Coskun from Bavaria. Unlike the fight at the German Championships, which Madeline Folgmann only narrowly won, the duel in the Olympiaworld in Innsbruck went much better, with the Sennstadt native preferring it. Madeline Folgemann builds up her powerful attacking taekwondo right from the start and at the same time prevents the Bavarian from developing her attacking power. You can guess how Asli Coskun became increasingly desperate because Madeline Folgmann hardly showed any errors. In the end there was a clear 22:10 victory on the scoreboard. In the quarter-finals she kept the upper hand against the strong Austrian Lea Höglinger. The road to the medal proved to be the hard plank that Madeline Folgmann and her trainer Björn Pistel had to drill in order to achieve a medal. The sports student from Nettetal skilfully took Lea Höglinger’s strong front leg out of the game and in turn managed to score again and again after powerful passages. It was a close and exciting fight, which Madeline Folgemann finally won 11:5. The cry of victory at the end of the fight indicated the pressure that the national combatant was losing at that moment. That was the longed-for medal after a long dry spell.
In the semifinals against the Croatian Helena Dujmic, who is known for her attacking power and dangerousness for headshots, she managed an almost perfect fight. She fought hard and repeatedly countered Helena Dujmic’s attacks. In the end it was a clear 22:6 victory for Madeline Folgemann. In the final, she faced China’s Ju Zuo, who took advantage of her opponent’s passive attitude and noticeable respect in the first round. Madeline Folgemann started the second round with a clear deficit of 0:13. Here she appeared much more self-confident and held strong against it. Despite all efforts, the fight is clearly lost afterwards.
“It’s a strong Silver medal that gives the right momentum for next week’s Grand Prix,” she says. Trainer Pistel said of her success: “It was a very important success and a real liberation, which was due after the good performance of the last few months and hard training work.” The next challenge is the Grand Prix with the best 32 athletes in the Olympic weight classes. Two weeks later, the Luxembourg Open is coming up.
