Leprosy in Greece: A disease that has almost disappeared
The Hellenic Dermatological and Venereological Society (EDAE), on the occasion of the Leprosy case, which was detected in our country, with a patient being treated at the Patras General Hospital in Rio, informed the citizens that there is no danger and no reason to panic.
Hansen’s disease, or Leprosy, as it is better known, is a chronic infection that mainly affects the human skin and nervous system. The disease is caused by the mycobacterium Leprosy and its transmission is extremely difficult and occurs under special conditions. This is a special rare condition, with a frequency that is constantly declining worldwide.

The Vice President of EDAE Mr. G. Kontochristopoulos, Dermatologist-Venereologist, Director, Dermatology Clinic of ESY, Hospital of Venereal & Dermatological Diseases “Andreas Syggros”, clarifies:Leprosy is a disease non-lethal and completely curable with common antibiotics. Usually no hospitalization while the incarceration of patients anachronistic and morally unacceptable. For this reason, the public should not worry. But neither should the disease be stigmatized and certainly not the person suffering from it».
The President of EDAE Mr. G. Barkis, Dermatologist – Venereologist, Doctor, Medical School of EKPA, states in this regard: “The Dermatologist is the competent Doctor who is well aware of the symptoms of the disease, who recognizes in time and recommends the appropriate treatment. Therefore, there is no reason to panic and worry. We have to be reassuring as Leprosy is not easily transmitted, while there are many medicines to treat. For anything you notice, do not worry, and consult your Dermatologist».
We remind you that a week ago EODY had confirmed a case of leprosy in Greece. In his announcement, he had commented that he is “in good condition»The 65-year-old patient who is being treated with a view at the Dermatology Clinic of the Rio Patras Hospital.
