The Eden House of Culture will be demolished. It will be replaced by the largest loggia
In the immediate vicinity of the town hall and near the newly built shopping center stands the building of the Eden House of Culture, which has not been used for more than fifteen years. The building, built in 1980 on the site of a former amusement park, served its original purpose for a relatively short time.
It has been closed since 2005 mainly due to economic unsustainability. The city district of Prague 10, to which the house already belongs, has therefore decided to announce an international architectural competition that will set a new direction for this dilapidated space. In the end, the expert jury selected the project of the architectural studio Ohboi and the design company Jika-cz.
A new face around Eden
“The current cultural house and its surroundings are to be transformed into a desirable city address where citizens will find a modern building with apartments and a multifunctional hall and a significantly revitalized public space, “says Prague 10.
The architects themselves wanted to be different from standard development. In new apartment buildings, there should be apartments of different sizes of different shapes to suit all types of inhabitants as much as possible. “The houses we design use the idea of shared community spaces. We know that this is not very common in the Czech Republic yet, but future residents will live together in the galleries, the connecting bridge and even some rooms, “explained Jan Kubát from the Ohboi studio.
The competition assignment included, among other things, the fact that the architects would solve a new cultural space that would replace KD Eden and, in connection with that, enough parking spaces for both residents and work for possible other cultural programs.
“We placed the multifunctional hall undergroundwhich means that the noise will not bother the residents in the area. An outdoor amphitheater connected to the park will also serve social events, “Kubát described. “Public amenities, including shops, cafes and restaurants, will then be located on the ground floor of the houseHe added. Parking will move underground. The new complex will be separated from the busy Vršovická Street by an alley of mature plane trees, and it will then be connected to the Vlasta housing estate by a new staircase and a passage.
The winner was elected unanimously
The international jury agreed unanimously on the winning proposal. “The design respects the location of the original House of Eden and integrates its premises with new urban housing into one whole in an extra-level concept. The main hall of the underground culture house is situated outside the above-ground volumes of the city’s housing and is entered into the public space as part of the related parterre. The project motivates and gives the place liveliness, a fresh idea, including the proposed typology of housing, “explained the decision of the jury, its chairman, architect Ivan Kroupa.
It is interesting that the project of the Spanish studio Martinez Morero Recabarren Estudio, which relied on the opposite theory, took second place. He wanted to preserve the house of culture even including the interiors, the design then shows a completely new glass shell.
Schedule
It is not yet clear exactly when the new owners will be able to move in. “It will be necessary to obtain all the opinions of the authorities concerned, will be followed by a discussion at the building office and then a competition of the construction contractor. We estimate that the beginning could be in 2025, but in the current very turbulent times it is increasing prognosis Of course difficult, “ concluded Prague 10 spokesman Jan Hamrník.
The appearance of a multifunctional hall for three hundred seated and six hundred standing spectators.
