migrant dies hit by train
A migrant died hit by a freight train on Sunday morning May 29 in Calais (Pas-de-Calais), reported the prosecution of Boulogne-sur-Mer. Help was “called at 6:02 a.m. for a male pedestrian, of undetermined age, hit by a freight train at chemin Castre”southeast of Calais, said the firefighters of Pas-de-Calais.
This unidentified man, “a priori adult, and rather of African origin”appeared when the train arrived “lying on the track, and possibly lying in a sleeping bag”said Boulogne-sur-Mer deputy prosecutor Patrick Leleu.
It is “possibly he got up” in the last moments, “without the driver having had, at any time whatsoever, the possibility of avoiding it”, added the magistrate. The man died instantly. “Given the place, which is not the most accessible place” to move in, the investigation is oriented “either towards the trail of suicide, or that of significant alcoholism, with disorientation”has followed Patrick Leleu. The Calais police station will “getting closer to associations and the migrants themselves” to try to identify it.
Hundreds of migrants, including Iraqis, Iranians, Sudanese and Eritreans, survived in camps on the northern coast of France, in the hope of crossing into England. A 25-year-old Sudanese is already dead on March 1 after being hit by a train while walking along a railway track in Marck, a town neighboring Calais. On November 4, a similar accident occurred a few hundred meters away. A train had hit a group of four migrants traveling on the tracks between Dunkirk and Calais, causing one death, one serious injury and two minor injuries.
According to the maritime prefecture of the Channel and the North Sea, the perilous crossings of the Channel, aboard makeshift boats, also left 31 dead and four missing in 2021, and caused another death in 2022.
