In Piacenza digitally reconstructed Klimt’s Medicine, the masterpiece in 1944
In the former church of the Carmine in Piacenza, Gustav Klimt’s Medicine was digitally reconstructed, one of the three so-called ‘University paintings’ that were seized by the Nazis and destroyed in 1944 in the fire of the Immendorf castle.
On the occasion of the exhibition Klimt. The man, the artist, his worldfrom 26 May at theFormer Church of the Carmine of Piacenza the event is presented to the public Klimt. The reconstructed workan important digital reconstruction project through which one of the major works of Gustav Klimt lost forever: the Medicinean extremely controversial work, painted by the artist in the early 1900s and made on commission among the allegories designed for the ceiling of the Aula Magna of theUniversity of Vienna.
There Medicine is one of the three paintings that Klimt painted on behalf of the University of Vienna (la Medicinethere Philosophy and the Law), and which were later rejected by the university because they were considered too critical of science (Medicine was the one that caused the most scandal, due to the copious presence of nudes). Refused, they were returned to Klimt (the state wanted to transfer them to the Moderne Galerie in Vienna instead), who sold them to various buyers. They were then all seized by the Nazis in 1938, and during the war, in 1944, the three works were sent to the castle of Immendorf, near the Austrian capital: they were lost in the fire of the fortress, during a war.
The legacy of Piacenza’s legacy on the “reproducibility” of the works, on the relationship between art and new works, on the originality and authenticity of the work of art, on the role of as places of transmission of the cultural work. The aim of the exhibition is to show how the most advanced digital techniques allow us to get closer and closer to the faithful reproduction of a work made with traditional media (drawing, oil, tempera, marble, bronze and others), through scanning, photo-retouching and press that are unprecedented and, albeit still at the dawn of development, allow for impressive results.

The reconstructed work fits into the project The mystery of the lost masterpiecesthe series of Heaven Art made by Ballandi which tells the story of seven famous paintings – made between the seventeenth century and the fifties – tragically lost today and follows the exciting process of re-materialization thanks to the most modern technologies by Made Artthe organization founded by Adam Lowe a Madridcommitted to the enhancement of the world’s artistic heritage.
The event is part of the activities of the Municipality of Piacenza to promote the Open Laboratory Piacenza Territory Snodo – Por Fesr Emilia Romagna 2014-2020 – AXIS 6 Action 6.7.2 Promotionis organized by Art projects with the collaboration of ArtemisiaFactum Arte, Ballandi and Sky Arte.
