Why are we talking about a hair loss epidemic in Belgium?
A growing phenomenon
If you are not concerned by the problem, ask your pharmacist, he will tell you that products intended to counter hair loss have never sold so well (we are talking about an increase of almost 40% for all this which is capsules, vitamins or shampoos intended to slow down the fall). What explains this sharp increase in hair loss problems, in women as in men, lately?
In video, discover why sweating does not make you lose weight:
To answer this question, we interviewed Anne-Marie Mercier, expert for the brand Rene Furterer in Belgium, a brand specializing in hair care, which explains to us first of all that we must distinguish between the different types of hair loss: “There is genetic hair loss, that one is irreversible, it is quite simply that of men who go bald. Rare are the women affected by this disease, even if the recent Will Smith case has highlighted this androgenetic alopecia, it remains quite isolated. For this specific hair loss there is nothing to do, we can slow it down, we can improve the quality of the existing hair, but the loss is irreversible. »

Stress or Covid?
Anne-Marie Mercier puts it into perspective: “The hair loss epidemic that pharmacists and dermatologists are talking about right now is ‘reactive’ hair loss.which means that it is the result of external factors: stress, fatigue, emotional shock or certain diets which have generated deficiencies”… On social networks, some had even argued that hair loss was one of the coronavirus symptoms. “It has not been demonstrated, but, like all illnesses, the Covid weakens you, keeps you bedridden for several days, often without eating and this specific weakening, associated with the stress and the anxiety-provoking atmosphere that reigned in our countries, all of this largely explains why reactive hair loss is on the increase…Under the effect of these factors, the bulb weakens, the hair becomes thinner and then falls prematurely and we notice more sparse hair, often on the front of the skull. In most cases, a course of vitamins and diet will solve the problem. A mild shampoo and specific treatments are recommended and there are also cures in the form of ampoules to be applied directly to the scalp and massaged in which have proven their effectiveness on this type of hair loss. »

The scalp: the base
Anne-Marie Mercier also explains that apart from food and food supplements, it is essential to keep a healthy scalp: “I often compare hair to a plant: you won’t have a pretty plant if your soil isn’t healthy or poorly nourished, if you don’t disturb the weeds or if you don’t give enough water, fertilizer or light… It’s the same for the hair! Any part of the scalp. We lose an average of 80 hairs a day and that’s normal, but a weakened scalp will thin out more and, above all, will have more difficulty growing new hair. In the event of a reactive fall, we must work on these two aspects: slow down the fall AND reactivate the regrowth.”
Three golden rules for a healthy scalp
Anne-Marie Mercier, from the height of her 20 years of experience within a brand specializing in hair health, has identified 3 golden rules for healthy hair
1. Always brush your hair well, twice a day, to remove dead hair and air the scalp. Also massage your scalp as soon as you can, in circular movements from the back to the front of the crane.
2. Choose a shampoo that suits your scalp, not your hair texture. If you have dry hair you don’t have a dry scalp so you risk not nourishing your scalp enough. The shampoo is chosen according to the scalp, it is the care provided by the masks, or the conditioners which take care of the fiber over the length.
3. Often, people who lose their hair feel like they lose a lot when washing. It is a false impression do not hesitate to wash your hair regularly, because an excess of sebum on the scalp chokes the roots and prevents the hair from growing as it should.
Finally, if this fall persists or if you notice that you are losing more than 80 to 100 hairs per day, do not hesitate to consult a dermatologist who can decide on a blood test and prescribe a more suitable treatment.
