“Sweden, Finland’s NATO bid cannot proceed unless Ankara’s security problems are met”
Baku, May 26, AZERTAC
Turkey has made it clear to Sweden and Finland during a meeting in the capital Ankara that their NATO application can not proceed unless Ankara’s security problems are met through concrete steps and a certain time frame, the president’s spokesman said on Wednesday, according to Anadolu Agency.
Turkey noted that the PKK, YPG and PYD are all the same terrorist groups and conveyed their expectations on this issue to the delegations from Sweden and Finland during the meeting, Ibrahim Kalin told a press conference after the closed advisory meeting which lasted almost five hours.
In its more than 35-year-old terrorist campaign against Turkey, the PKK – listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union – has been responsible for the deaths of at least 40,000 people, including women, children and infants. YPG / PYD is the PKK’s Syrian offshoot.
“In the reports prepared on PYD / YPG, we explained that the organization committed war crimes. Therefore, we expressed that the reports should not be hidden in order to acquit PYD / YPG.
“We stated that if Turkey’s security problems are not addressed in concrete steps, the process will not move forward. Delegations received our message. They will discuss our demands with their leaders and they will respond to us,” he said.
Turkey expects a “correct implementation” of the 1999 NATO Summit principles and procedures related to the Alliance membership process, Kalin added.
He emphasized that Ankara had requested extradition to Sweden and Finland for the past 10 years.
