RTL Today – Police in Luxembourg: “The arrival of bodycams is a good thing”
“We cannot accept that our police officers are being attacked more and more often,” argues the president of the Luxembourg police union.
“It is a measure that can prevent many situations from degenerating”appointed former police minister Etienne Schneider almost 4 years ago.
The objective of the establishment of these bodycams is to calm complicated situations to prevent them from degenerating. These are small cameras that officers normally carry on their shoulders. From year to year, those arrested are less and less reluctant to be aggressive towards the police.
But it is also a protective measure for police officers. These small cameras cover many different facets, starting with data protection. Bodycams therefore had to become a reality from now on.
Pascal Ricquier the president of the police union: “Good thing the bodycams are coming. We demanded it because the police are increasingly filming using laptops. So we can also see things from the policeman’s point of view.”
The question obviously arises on what occasions these cameras could be used.
“This still needs to be clarified. When we look at what is indicated in the “Notices of Violations” project, we notice that it can be any situation. We will therefore have to leave the choice to the police officer to turn on his camera or to leave it off.
One question among many is who will have access to these images. For the president of the police union, they will be mainly intended for the prosecution.
