Canada ranks third, winning Sweden 4-3 OT in world hockey
TAMPERE – Drake Batherson scored 43 seconds in extra time and gave Canada a return victory from Sweden on Thursday night 4-3 in the World Hockey Semifinals.
In the quarterfinals on Saturday, defending Canada will face the Czech Republic and the United States Finland. The Czech Republic defeated Germany 4-1, the United States defeated Switzerland 3-0 and Finland defeated Slovakia 4-2.
Canada survived 3-0 in the third round. Ryan Graves made the 1:21 period and Pierre-Luc Dubois and Matt Barzal joined by 30 seconds apart to rule late.
When William Nylander was called to stumble 25 seconds into extra time, Batherson fired a sharp shot behind goalkeeper Linus Ullmark from the bottom of the starting circle.
“Obviously a 3-0 loss in the third set wasn’t what we were planning, but we were able to get that goal early in the third set,” Batherson said. “I was frustrated I took a penalty kick, and honestly I thought we were going to have a hard time coming back, but we never gave up.”
