Formula 1 | Schumacher happy to go to Monaco, a ‘historic place’ of F1
Mick Schumacher could have scored his first F1 points in the Spanish Grand Prix after reaching Q3 on Saturday, but he will ultimately have to wait a bit longer after poor strategy ejected him from the current Top 10.
Will he have another chance in Monaco this weekend? The Haas driver thinks in any case that it will be as difficult to overtake there as before, and this despite the new F1 which exclude close fights.
“Of course, the cars follow each other more easily, but Monaco is a circuit where it is impossible to overtake and these single-seaters are heavier. They are designed for high speeds with ground effect, so it will be interesting to observe. We will have to approach the weekend differently this year, but it will be the same for everyone and we will have to do the best job possible, especially in qualifying.”
If the Monaco Grand Prix could be in danger of disappearing from the calendar of the discipline, Schumacher would like the “jewels of F1” to keep their place.
“It’s been a part of Formula 1 for so long, it’s a historic place. It would be a real shame if it wasn’t part of the sport after all these years. It’s one of the biggest events to win. It would be unfortunate if the opportunity to win the triple crown disappeared (500 Miles of Indianapolis, 24h of Le Mans and Grand Prix of Monaco).
For the first time in Monaco, F1 cars will run on Fridays instead of Thursdays. A choice welcomed by the German driver.
“On Fridays I used to go cycling, training or visiting the team. Honestly, I think it’s the right choice because it cuts costs.”
This is only the second time that Schumacher is preparing to drive in Monaco at the wheel of a Formula 1 car. Last year he crashed in free practice on Saturday and was therefore unable to take part in qualifying .
“It’s going very well until then. We were in a good position but I did too much during the EP3 when I should have waited for qualifying. Monaco do not forgive, so I prefer not to do too much but I’m really looking forward to it because I had a lot of fun in the race. I take into account the demands of this circuit.”
