Belgian ‘fled to Ibiza’ arrested in the Netherlands
A notable Belgian child abuser who, according to his own words, had fled to Ibiza has been arrested in Heerlen, Limburg. The court in Gente Rony Van W. Friday in absentia to six years in prison. The man requested the announcement via Facebook, supposedly from under the Spanish sun. “Nice and warm here,” he wrote.
Yesterday Van W. was placed on the national search list and today he is already huge. “Strong work by our Belgian FAST team and their colleagues in the Netherlands,” the Belgian Minister of Justice reported on Twitter. “Small detail: it turned out that he wasn’t even in Ibiza.”
FAST teams are deployed for the (international) tracing of fugitive prosecutions.
From W. told against the Flemish newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws that he was in hiding in order to prepare for an appeal in cassation against the announcement. “When you are in prison, there is no one to help you. Then you cannot take steps as a free man. I therefore hope that my profession will start soon, so that I can move freely again.” He further directed that he addressed the court notice to his girlfriend in the Netherlands. It is unknown whether he is there.
Van W. was formed for raping a minor, sexual exploitation and making child pornography. The court had previously acquitted him. The Belgian public prosecutor had demanded 10 years against him.
