The government has declared a state of war in Hungary
Government Decree 180/2022. (V. 24.) of the Government Decree. decree having regard to the armed conflict and humanitarian catastrophe in Ukraine, and the elimination of their consequences in Hungary on the declaration of an emergency situationand a decree issued by the Prime Minister on Tuesday afternoon was published entitled Some Emergency Rules.
The decision, published in the Bulletin, declares the latest emergency because it reads:
“In the light of the armed conflict and the humanitarian catastrophe in the territory of Ukraine, and in order to prevent their consequences in Hungary for the entire territory of Hungary declares a state of emergency “.
The decision also states that the government, as a member of the government responsible for dealing with the consequences of the emergency in Hungary, appoints the Prime Minister.
The decree signed by Viktor Orbán will take effect on May 25, ie from Wednesday. The government has the opportunity to do all this after its two-thirds pro-government majority parliament voted on Tuesday to amend the 10th Amendment to the Basic Law, which gives the government the power to declare a state of emergency in the event of a war in the neighborhood. This amendment to the Basic Law was also published in a newspaper published late on Tuesday, so there was no legal obstacle to the publication of the Emergency Regulation.
The prime minister had already projected this in his afternoon emergency announcement and said he would outline the first steps in the new emergency on Wednesday. It is also worth mentioning that there is a government meeting on Wednesday, so there may be substantive announcements in the afternoon, even from the side of economic policy and budget.
In another decision, the government will end the coronavirus emergency with effect from June 1st.
