After the last election with breakdowns: Berlin CDU gets election worker bonus of 100 euros
According to the proposal by the Berlin CDU, election workers should receive a “election hero bonus” of 100 euros. The party writes this in a claim paper that is available to rbb.
The bonus is intended to replace the previous refreshment flat rate. So far, poll workers have been paid between EUR 60 if they are a member of a polling station board and EUR 12.50 if they transport voting documents. The CDU demands that the use of local public transport should also be free for election workers on election day. In addition, they should receive discounts for cultural offers.
With its paper, the CDU is reacting to the chaotic circumstances of the past Bundestag and House of Representatives elections in Berlin. The party demands that the transport of election documents should be organized centrally in the future – and no longer by the respective election boards. “Instead of planning with a low turnout, the number of ballot papers in each polling station must be as high as the number of eligible voters,” the paper says.
In order to avoid long queues in front of polling stations and since many postal voters are to be expected in the next election, the CDU proposes “pop-up postal polling stations, for example in shopping centers”. The guideline on election day should be that everyone must be able to cast their vote at a polling station within 15 minutes.
A commission of experts in Berlin is currently examining the past elections in Berlin. They are to submit a report and make suggestions for improvement by the summer of this year. According to the CDU, this body should then be “transformed into a permanent commission for the evaluation of elections”.
