Prague has a center for tumors of the cerebral cortex
A new specialized treatment center was established in Prague patients with pituitary adenomas, tumors of the cerebral cortex. The center connects several workplaces. They are in it neurosurgeons, neuroendocrinology and other specialists.
The establishment of a center for the treatment of patients with pituitary adenomas was confirmed by the head of the Department of Neurosurgery and Neurooncology of the First Medical Faculty of Charles University and the Central Military Hospital [ÚVN] in Prague prof. David Netuka.
“In the Czech Republic, about 300 operations for this disease are now performed annually at eleven workplaces, while over 40 percent of these operations are performed at our clinic. Centralization supports both endocrinological care of patients with pituitary adenomas, as well as the patients themselves and the patient organization. “ said the professor.
Centers of excellence for the treatment of pituitary tumors consist of two clinical workplaces of the 1st Faculty of Medicine [1. LF UK]. It is the Department of Neurosurgery and Neurooncology at the Central Military Hospital and III. Department of Internal Medicine – Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the General University Hospital [VFN].
The Center also cooperates with the Radiodiagnostic Clinic of the 1st Medical Faculty of Charles University and the General Hospital, the Radiodiagnostic Department of the Central Hospital, the Departments of Ophthalmology and the General Hospital, the Institute of Radiation Therapy of the Central Hospital, the Department of Stereotactic and Radiation Neurosurgery at Na Homolce Hospital and other specialized departments. Of course, there is a two-way collaboration with attending endocrinologists, neurologists, ophthalmologists and other specialists who take care of patients with polar doctors.
The center shows the way to modern care
Pituitary adenomas are relatively common non-malignant brain tumors. Their diagnosis and treatment requires interdisciplinary cooperation of a neurologist, endocrinologist, ophthalmologist, neurosurgeon and ideally an ENT specialist.
The most common problem for which a patient with pituitary adenoma will seek medical attention is visual impairment. And mostly in the sense of a narrowed visual field – the so-called bitemporal hemianopsia. Here is the tumor pressure at the junction of the optic nerves. A large group of patients also report blurred, blurred vision. These patients must be examined by an ophthalmologist, who will evaluate and objectify their visual examination of the perimeter. Furthermore, patients may complain of headaches, content, inefficiency and rather non-specific difficulties.
An endocrinological examination is always necessary to determine the exact diagnosis. Therefore, it is an integral part of the new center III. Department of Internal Medicine – Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism 1. LF UK a VFN.
“Since its establishment in 1945, the clinic has been dedicated to endocrinology in its entirety and is the largest endocrinology clinic in the Czech Republic. […] Similarly, the Department of Neurosurgery and Neurooncology of the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University and ÚVN is the largest pituitary surgery for many decades and the most pituitary adenomas in the Czech Republic. Proto It is therefore logical that pituitary tumors 1. LF UK, “ explains the head of III. internal clinics – clinics of endocrinology and metabolism 1. LF UK and VFN prof. Michal Kršek.
Teaching medicine for open heads, say doctors
The mission of the Center of Excellence for the Treatment of Pituitary Tumors is, in addition to providing comprehensive care, also the organization of educational courses and seminars, including treatment consultations within the framework of professional consultation seminars.
“At the same time, the center and its experts guarantee high-quality university medical education, which offers our students an insight into the hands of doctors during a very complex operating brain,” praises the dean of the 1st Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, prof. Martin Vokurka.
His words were supplemented by Mikuláš Kosák from the Department of Internal Medicine, First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University and ÚVN: “In addition to improving the care of patients with pituitary diseases, the aim of the center is also to work in the field of postgraduate education. As Professor Coach once told me, modern state-of-the-art healthcare cannot be built on individuals who enjoy even divine respect, but on a well-coordinated team. “
The truth is that due to the establishment of the center, special guests came to ÚVN. Prof. John Kopchick of the University of Ohio, the discoverer of pegvisomant, the most effective drug for acromegaly. There was also a world-renowned expert on pituitary disease prof. Peter Trainer from the University of Manchester. In his lecture, he focused on newly developed drugs for Cushing’s disease and acromegaly. A leading European expert on radiosurgery of central nervous system tumors, prof. Alexander Muacevic from the European Radiosurgery Center in Munich.
