Canton of Zurich wants to make apprenticeships more attractive – TOP ONLINE
The 14th vocational training conference took place in Horgen ZH this year. This conference was attended by, among others, the education director of the Canton of Zurich, Silvia Steiner, and the economics director, Carmen Walker Späh. The focus of the discussion was the apprenticeship.
Specifically, approaches to improving vocational training were discussed. “Every employee must actively take care of their personal and professional development. We therefore have a duty to enable young people to take on this responsibility. Vocational training must lay a solid foundation of knowledge and learning technology,” emphasized Silvia Steiner, government councilor and director of education, at the conference.
Government Councilor and Economics Director Carmen Walker Späh emphasizes the value of qualified workers for the economy. «It will be crucial that we better exploit the potential that lies dormant in Germany. The RAV consistently promote the rapid reintegration of job seekers and are constantly expanding their offers: They strengthen required skills in the context of digitization, provide offers with new learning technologies and offer additional services for determining one’s position and career planning”. Because without suitable measures, the canton of Zurich will be short of around 210,000 workers by 2050 if economic growth continues, explained Carmen Walker Späh.
10,000 additional apprenticeships by 2030
But the canton of Zurich is already growing rapidly. In addition, technological change affects both the economy and society. “We have to see that several young people keep their apprenticeships running. That’s why additional new apprenticeships are needed in the canton of Zurich by 2030,” explains Niklaus Schatzmann, head of the office for secondary education and vocational training in the canton of Zurich. To this end, the proposals for better vocational training should be accepted and implemented by the canton.
