Slovenia’s epic new tourist route connects the three most beautiful regions in the country
Eco-friendly holidays are on the rise – as they should be. If we want to save the planet, but still enjoy the joys of travel, eco-tourism is the way to go. And among all green-minded tourist destinations around the world, Slovenia is currently in first place. The Central European country is fast becoming known as one of the best sustainable hotspots on the continent.
It is one of the latest environmentally conscious initiatives in the country The road to the green capitals of Slovenia, a route that connects three ‘regional centers’ of the country: Ljubljana, Kočevje and Bela Krajina. While the pandemic route was launched in October 2020, it is now probably the first real opportunity most international travelers will have to visit.
Ljubljana is the official capital of Slovenia. A cosmopolitan, green and full of things to do, it is a vibrant metropolis, but also a home Ljubljana Marshes Nature Parkthe largest wetland area in the country.
Kočevje, meanwhile, is described as Slovenia’s ‘natural capital’. The city itself is in the heart of an untouched forest area, while the wider region contains UNESCO protection Peach beech forest Krokar. This is a great area for hikers to explore the undisturbed nature – and maybe even spot some bears.
The final stop, Bela krajina, is the so-called Slovenian ‘cultural capital’. Below the Croatian border, Bela krajina is known as the heart of Slovenian cuisine, and it is also full of vineyards. All destinations on the way to green capitals have received a sustainability certificate, which means that they meet high standards for sustainable tourism development.
So what is the best way to travel to cross the Green Trail? Well, trains, of course! The entire line is covered by domestic railway lines, which ensures that you avoid any unpleasant cars that consume gas and pollute heavily. Travelers are also invited to cycle along the route – although some stages are quite long.
