“Fans” of Bundesliga soccer club Rapid are said to have attacked Salzburg player Luka Sucic at a service area near Vienna after the defeat against Salzburg. The police and Red Bull Salzburg confirmed the incident on Tuesday.
Due to a doping test, the Croatian national player did not take the team bus but made the return journey from Vienna to Salzburg with a club employee in a car. During a stopover at the Steinhäusl service station, Sucic and his companion were then attacked – according to the “Kronen Zeitung” also physically.
In the ORF interview, Red Bull Salzburg speaks of perpetrators who are recognizable as Rapid supporters. The police would neither confirm nor deny the death. The car was kicked and liquid was poured into the car, a police spokesman said. So nobody was injured. By the time the executive arrived, all opportunities would have already left the service area.
Rapid: “Abuses absolutely cannot be tolerated”
Rapid told the APA in a statement: “Any attacks, especially on players, supervisors or officials, but of course also beyond that, are absolutely not to be tolerated and we condemn them in the strongest possible terms. We hope that both the player and the supervisor are doing well and we very much regret this incident.” Rapid said that they had only just heard about it and hoped “for a very quick clarification and also information from the authorities”.
It was only on May 8th after the Vienna derby between Austria and Rapid that riots broke out. According to the police, four people were injured.
